Orthodontic Assistant

Orthodontic assistants are trained to help an orthodontist with procedures related to straightening the teeth, such as adjusting braces, making impressions, taking x-rays and helping with office administrative duties. Orthodontic assistant duties include:
  • Perform administrative duties, such as setting appointments, billing, taking payments and maintaining patient records.
  • Sterilization
  • Radiology
  • Workplace safety
  • Records management
  • Working with fixed and removable orthodontic appliances
  • Orthodontic materials
  • Preparing the appointment room prior to a patient’s visit,
  • Taking the patient’s oral health history
  • Tooth Impressions
  • Remove stitches
  • Prepare the tools necessary for each appointment
  • Hand the tools to the orthodontist during the examination and treatment
* The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts orthodontist assistant jobs will grow at a much faster-than-average rate of 31 percent between 2010 and 2020.
